World Sinfonia's vision is to establish an ongoing presence of Toronto's musical diversity through it's collective dynamic at home and on world stages, at cultural meets and international events. Led by Levon Ichkhanian, with
33 years of musical experience in cross-cultural fusion of music, World
Sinfonia is a collective of leading world musicians and hidden gems residing
in Toronto with diverse backgrounds including Morocco, Iran, the Caribbean,
Cuba, Moldovia, Iceland, Middle East, India and Armenia...
Levon Ichkhanian Born into a family of musicians in Lebanon, Levon Ichkhanian's 1st professional gig was at the age of 13. Over the past 30 years, his knowledge has spanned over all areas of music - performing, composing, producing, recording, touring, and writing in Jazz, World and Traditional genres. Levon plays fretless & fretted electric & acoustic Guitars, Oud, Bouzoukis, Banjitar & Mandolin. He’s toured the world with his band and with artists including Peter Murphy & A.R. Rahman. He performed at the Beijing Olympics and at numerous jazz, guitar and folk festivals. Levon has 3 solo CDs (featuring Grammy winners John Patitucci, Paquito D'Rivera, & Bernard Purdie, & former UZEB member Alain Caron). He’s played on over 100 recordings for artists as Canadian Idol, Isabel Bayrakdarian & India’s Hariharan. He composed for the Nashville Chamber Orchestra & created soundtracks for filmmakers like Atom Egoyan. He was an orchestra member in the world premiere stage production of Lord of the Rings, & performs in other shows including 3 Mo’ Divas, Spamalot, My Fair Lady and Jersey Boys. Levon’s improvisation skills & explorations form the basis for his workshops & published articles. He was awarded the International Association of Jazz Educator's Award for "Outstanding Service to Jazz Education" and conducts clinics, master classes and artist residencies worldwide.
